~ Railway Barons ~
Railway barons helped shape the railroad system. One of the most famous railroad barons was Edward Harriman. He was born in Hempstead, New York. By the time he was 21 years old, he had his own seat in the stockmarket. In 1897, Edward Harriman decided to take on the challenge to restore the Union Pacific Railroad and save it from bankruptcy. “Harriman gradually gained control over many of the central western and southwestern lines in the United States” (History.com). He became a very successful man and is a legend of railroad history.
